DDC-I is Celebrating 40 Years!
DDC-I, Inc. is a privately held company providing software development of real-time operating systems, software development tools, and software services for safety- and mission-critical embedded applications, headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. 40 years ago, in 1986, DDC-I was incorporated in the United States.
The Early Years
The company started as a commercial outgrowth of Dansk Datamatik Center (DDC), a Danish software research and development organization of the 1980s and originally focused on Ada compilers.

Several key engineers from DDC transferred to DDC-I at its founding, including Ole Oest (president from 1985–1996, later CTO) and Thorkil B. Rasmussen (longest-serving employee, 41 years including DDC).
The first office was located in a historic building, with Danish design influences and a patriotic color scheme.
In 1986, DDC-I opened its Phoenix office which is now its headquarters. DDC-I maintained its Danish office in Lyngby until 2003.

Technical Achievements and Products
- Ada Compiler (DACS): DDC-I’s Ada Compiler System (DACS) was the first validated Ada compiler in Europe (1984). It was designed for the CR80 computer and later ported to various platforms, including VAX, Intel x86, Motorola 680×0, and SPARC.
- OEM Compiler Kits: DDC-I sold compiler front-ends to OEMs, allowing customers to implement their own back-ends. Early customers included Nokia, ACT, and Honeywell.
- DACS 80×86:Became the company’s most successful compiler, targeting all Intel x86 processors. Its efficient code generation and fast tasking run-time made it notable in the industry.
- Debugger Development: DDC-I developed a robust Ada debugger, supporting Ada-specific features and optimized code, which was advanced for its time.
- Expansion to RISC and New Architectures: DDC-I developed compilers for Motorola 680×0, Intel 860, and SPARC, adapting to industry shifts toward RISC architectures.
- Launch of Deos RTOS: In 2008, DDC-I entered the embedded real-time operating system market, where its major product is Deos. Aimed at avionics and military applications, Deos has a history of certifications to DO-178B/DO-178C DAL A as well as to other standards for safety-critical software in airborne systems and military platforms.
- Release of the OpenArbor IDE framework to support Deos.
- Support for ARINC-653 offered on Deos
- Deos SafeMC (patented technology to optimize use of multi-core processors in safety-critical systems) released 2016
- FACE Conformance achieved
- Deos SafeMC 1st baseline DAL-A certified artifacts shipped in 2021, 2nd baseline DAL-A certified artifacts shipped in 2023
- ME Boot released – Modular, Extensible Boot enables BSP functional components to be comprised of independent executables to accelerate upgrades and substantially reduce costs
