ARES Will Provide Enhanced Cyber Security for U.S. Airforce Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAVs)
Phoenix, AZ. March 30, 2016. DDC-I, a leading supplier of software and professional services for mission- and safety-critical applications, today announced that Intelligent Automation, Inc. (IAI) will utilize DDCI’s Deos safety-critical DO-178 real-time operating system to develop an Agile Resilient Embedded System (ARES) prototype that will help the U.S. Airforce deliver enhanced cyber security for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS).
The new system will incorporate advanced encryption featuring Lincoln Laboratory’s Open Cryptographic Key Management Architecture (LOCKMA). It will also utilize the COTS open architecture PIX4 autopilot solution. Both modules will be ported to Deos to enhance security and safety criticality.
Improving cyber security for UASs has become crucial due to their increased participation in critical missions, and their dependency on cyber resources. However, current fielded systems do not adequately secure UAS mission computers against cyber threats. To address this critical need and improve embedded system security, IAI and its collaborators proposed the Agile Resilient Embedded System (ARES).
ARES will help develop a new security architecture for embedded systems and associated designs for each architecture module. A reference implementation of the ARES architecture will demonstrate its performance, and enable rapid prototyping. The ARES design philosophy and capabilities can be extended to other UAS sub-systems, enabling secure mission computers and an open, secure, extensible architecture for application to more general cyber systems.
“DDC-I excited to have been selected for the ARES project,” said Greg Rose, vice president of marketing and product management at DDC-I. “Time and space partitioning are integral to the Deos architecture, making it ideal for delivering enhanced safety and security capabilities for sophisticated mission critical applications like next generation UASs.”.
Deos is a safety-critical embedded RTOS that has been certified to DO-178 DAL A since 1998. Featuring deterministic real-time response, the time and space partitioned RTOS employs patented ‘slack scheduling’ and cache partitioning to deliver faster worst-case response and higher CPU utilization than any other certifiable safety-critical COTS RTOS.
Deos was built from the ground up for safety-critical applications, and is the only certifiable time and space partitioned COTS RTOS that has been created using RTCA DO-178, Level A processes from the very first day of its product development. Deos provides the easiest, lowest cost path of any COTS RTOS to DO-178 Level A certification, the highest level of safety criticality.
